Elvis in Hawaii
Elvis first visited Hawaii in the late 1950’s and immediately fell in love with it’s beauty and it’s people. He loved it so much that he went on to film 3 movies there.
His first movie in Hawaii was filmed in 1961 and was based on the book Beach Boy, written by Allan Weiss. The movie was originally going to be named Hawaiian Beach Boy, but was later changed to Blue Hawaii. Elvis’ mother in the movie was played by Angela Landsbury, she was 35 at the time, Elvis was 26.
His second movie filmed in Hawaii was called Girls, Girls, Girls. This movie was filmed in 1962 and was rated #6 on Variety’s list of top-grossings films that year.
Movie # 3 was called Paradise Hawaiian Style and was filmed in 1966. This movie was filmed in Honolulu, Maui, Kauai, the Cona Coast, and various other locations in California. The closing credits of the movie include this, “Our gratitude to the peoples of the Pacific at the Polynesian Cultural Center, Laie, Oahu, Hawaii”.
Elvis’ best known performance in Hawaii was his, “Elvis, Aloha from Hawaii” show on January 14, 1973. This live performance was telecasted worldwide.
Elvis loved Hawaii and visited on many occasions, his last visit was in March of 1977.
